Rare Set of Roman Britain War Chariot Bronze Fittings – 1st Century AD (4 pcs)
A superb and exceptionally rare set of Roman Britain War Chariot Bronze Fittings, dating to the 1st century AD. This grouping comprises two robust skirted terret rings and two uniquely decorated bronze appliqué plates. The terret rings exhibit substantial wear and patina consistent with their antiquity and functional use, conforming stylistically to late first-century examples. The two appliqué plates are of particular interest, bearing detailed, albeit enigmatic, decoration for which no exact parallel has been identified in our research. All four pieces exhibit a rich dark-green patination and remain in excellent preserved condition for their age.
These fittings were part of the harnessing system of a Roman war chariot, with terret rings serving to guide the reins, while the decorative plates likely served a ceremonial or status-bearing function. Finds like this offer a rare glimpse into the military and transport technologies of Roman Britain during the height of the Empire’s expansion into the Isles.
